Taylor Swift and the late Michael Jackson top the list of nominees at the American Music Awards, announced Tuesday. Both are among nominees for 2009 artist of the year, along with Lady Gaga, Eminem and Kings of Leon.
The AMAs will be presented Nov. 22 in a ceremony broadcast live on ABC from Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater.
Among artists slated to perform on the show is “American Idol’s” Adam Lambert, debuting music from his upcoming CD. Also performing are Alicia Keys, Black Eyed Peas and Jennifer Lopez.
Taylor Swift, who received worldwide attention when Kanye West interrupted her acceptance speech at the MTV Music Video Awards in September, received six AMA nominations.
Jackson had five nominations, including favorite male artist in both R&B and pop/rock categories.
Eminem earned four nominations, followed by Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Kings of Leon and T.I. with three apiece.
Paula Abdul, Lambert and Snoop Dogg announced the nominees Tuesday morning at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
Artists will be honored in the categories of pop/rock, country, rap/hip-hop, soul/R&B, alternative, adult contemporary, Latin and contemporary inspirational.
Dick Clark Productions, which produces the award show, will stream a live online pre-show from the red carpet, hosted by Julie Moran; it will be available on ABC.com, Ustream.com and mycokerewards.com and mycoke.com.
Tickets to the show are available through Ticketmaster.
Nominees were selected from data supplied by the Nielsen Co.’s Broadcast Data Systems, which monitors radio airplay performance, and Soundscan, which tracks retail music sales.
For the third year, winners will be determined by online voting, which begins Tuesday at www.ama.abc.com, www.amavote.com and www.mycokerewards.com.
