Michael Che Jokes He’s Next on the Chopping Block After Joy Reid Firing: ‘Only One More to Go, Baby’ | Video

The “Weekend Update” jab on Saturday’s “SNL” comes after MSNBC unexpectedly cancelled “The ReidOut”

Last week was a hectic one for much of the world, between the Trump-promoted AI vision for Gaza, Trump and JD Vance’s contentious meeting with Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy, and the cancellation of MSNBC’s “The ReidOut” — and of course, Michael Che and Colin Jost had jokes on “Weekend Update.” As Che put it, he’s probably next on NBC’s termination list: “There’s only one more to go, baby.”

Jost kicked things off by describing the meeting between Vance, Trump, and Zelenskyy — in which the American president said the Ukrainian is “gambling with WWIII” — as having gone “pretty good” before he added that “now, thanks to that meeting, now you actually can gamble on World War III on FanDuel.”

The duo also tackled an AI-generated video that appears to show a “transformed Gaza” complete with a “Trump hotel, bearded belly dancers, and Benjamin Netanyahu lounging on the beach.” The video, Jost added, was titled “ISIS Recruitment.”

Che’s NBC joke closed out the segment and comes days after Reid’s show “The ReidOut” was cancelled by MSNBC’s new head. The move resulted in “tense” staff meetings at the network and staff “expressed frustration and disbelief, outraged that they had learned of their show’s fate from reports in the press rather than from leadership. Others demanded answers about the reasoning behind the cancellation of ‘The ReidOut’ and what it meant for their futures at the network.”

Reid’s colleague Rachel Maddow previously called out the network over her dismissal and that staffers were being forced to reapply for their jobs.

“It’s not the right way to treat people and its inefficient and it’s unnecessary and it kind of drops the bottom out of whether people think this is a good place to work,” she said before adding that the Reid news was “very, very hard to take.”
