M.I.A. Unveils YouTube-Inspired Album Cover

Singer with vendetta against the Times appears imprisoned by streams

M.I.A. — whose beef last week with New York Times Magazine writer Lynn Hirschberg over an unflattering profile led the Grammy-winning rapper to tweet the reporter’s cellphone number – has unveiled the artwork for her upcoming album “///Y/” (pronounced “Maya”).

The cover – depicting the singer imprisoned by YouTube control bars — is a reference to the violent video for “Born Free,” which was banned by the video site a day after it appeared online.

In April, a spokesperson for YouTube said the site’s rules prohibit content like pornography or gratuitous violence. If the content breaks our terms then we remove it and if a user repeatedly breaks the rules we disable their account."
