MGM will become a financial partner on the upcoming Sony Pictures' thriller "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," the studios announced on Tuesday.
Under the pact, Sony will handle marketing and distribution, while MGM will oversee select international television licensing for the film.
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" will be released on December 21, 2011, as the first film in the three-picture adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s book series The Millennium Trilogy.
Directed by David Fincher and starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, the film is based on the first novel in the trilogy. The screenplay is by Steven Zaillian.
The agreement emanates from a recent announcement that Sony and MGM will explore co-financing opportunities on movie projects for the next five years. Sony and MGM have teamed up in the past, most recently partnering on the next James Bond film.
Entitled "Bond 23," the newest entrant in the super spy saga is set for worldwide release on November 9, 2012.
In recent years, the two studios have collaborated on numerous films, including "Casino Royale," "Quantum of Solace," "21," "Yours, Mine and Ours" and this summer's "Zookeeper."
