Sony Pictures Entertainment and MGM are co-financing the upcoming "21 Jump Street," the studios announced Wednesday.
Under the deal, Sony will handle marketing and distribution and MGM will have responsibility for select international television licensing. On Tuesday, the studios announced a similar partnership with the movie "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo."
The studios have a formal agreement to look at co-financing opportunities and have worked together on "Casino Royale," "Quantum of Solace," "21," "Yours, Mine and Ours," "The Pink Panther" and this summer's comedy "Zookeeper."
"21 Jump Street" is based on the old Fox series starring Johnny Depp about young police officers who work undercover in high schools and colleges. Depp has a cameo.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are directing. Michael Bacall wrote the screenplay based on a treatment from Bacall and Jonah Hill.
Neal Moritz is producing and the late Stephen J. Cannell will receive posthumous credit as a producer.
The film is scheduled for a March 16, 2012 release.
