President Barack Obama reached out to Joan Rivers‘ daughter, Melissa, after the comedy legend passed away earlier this month.
Melissa revealed the kind gesture from the White House during a preview of 90-minute E! special “Fashion Police: Celebrating Joan,” which will be Melissa’s first television appearance since her mother died on Sept. 4.

“I received a letter from the White House from President Obama, someone who was often a target of her jokes, as was Mrs. Obama,” Melissa said in the clip (above). “I received a handwritten note saying, ‘Not only did she make us laugh, she made us think.’ And I think that’s one of the things people now are realizing. It wasn’t just the funny, she made us think.”
The special will air Friday at 8 p.m. ET after a marathon of “Fashion Police,” the bulk of the television network’s “Joan Day” celebration.
