The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 176 filmmakers, artists and executives to become members. The list includes actors Jessica Chastain, Bryan Cranston, Matthew McConaughey, Melissa McCarthy and Andy Serkis and directors Terrence Malick, Michel Hazanavicius and the Dardenne Brothers.
While the Academy came under fire before the last Oscars for being predominantly old, male and white, the roster of new members is typical of recent years. It is more than 25 percent female and includes a number of younger artists and people of color. It is also strongly international in nature.
Among the acting invitees are several who are best known for television, including Simon Baker ("The Mentalist"), Sean Bean ("Game of Thrones"), Cranston ("Breaking Bad") and McCarthy ("Mike & Molly").
Also invited: recent nominees Berenice Bejo, Demian Bichir, Jonah Hill and Janet McTeer, and 2011 winners Jean Dujardin (left) and Octavia Spencer.
The invitation to Serkis can be seen as an indication that while the Academy's Actors Branch did not feel compelled to nominate the British actor for his performance-capture roles in "The Lord of the Rings" and "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," they do respect the technique.
The list of directors invited to join is long on those from outside the United States. Prospective new members include Joseph Cedar from Israel, Philippe Falardeau from Canada, Asghar Farhadi from Iran, Rodrigo Garcia from Mexico, Hazanavicius from France, Wong Kar Wai from Hong Kong and the Dardenne Brothers from Belgium.
Other invitees include producers Letty Aronson ("Midnight in Paris"), Dede Gardner ("The Tree of Life") and Grant Heslov ("The Ides of March") and writers Stephen King, Oren Moverman and Kristen Wiig.
Hazanavicius and Farhadi were invited to join both the Directors and Writers Branches, while Heslov was invited by both the Writers and Producers Branches. A prospective member can only join one branch, but a member of one branch who was nominated for an Oscar by another branch can also vote in that other branch's nominating process.
Individual branches meet in the spring to consider and recommend new members, with a limit on the number of invitations designed to keep the voting membership of the Academy at a relatively steady level. (It has stayed below 6,000 for the last decade.) The names recommended by the branch are then put before the Board of Governors for approval.
The number of invitations is close to the number from last year, when 178 were invited. For a number of years prior to 2011, the Academy typically invited fewer than 150 new members.
A number of agents, including Ari Emmanuel and Bryan Lourd, were invited to become associate members, a category that does not include voting privileges and is not recognized on the AMPAS Board of Governors. Agents have long complained that they are not permitted to join the Academy.
At the same time that they announced the list of invitees, the Board of Governors also announced that the name of the Art Directors Branch will be changed to the Designers Branch.
