(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Wednesday’s “The Masked Singer.”)
When Willie Robertson was unmasked as the Mallard on Wednesday’s episode of “The Masked Singer,” there’s one thing he didn’t get to mention on-screen, that it’s very important you know: the “Duck Dynasty” star is well aware that his costume is not actually a mallard, it’s a wood duck.
“Technically, it’s not a mallard. Technically, it was a wood duck,” Robertson told TheWrap. “I did let them know that, and we thought that would be funny, too. Or maybe another clue, that, obviously, I would know the difference in species of ducks.”
Though the costume was Fox’s suggestion — and their naming decision — Robertson loved it and was totally onboard to be the Mallard (which, again, is actually a wood duck).
“They said, ‘We have an idea.’ And as soon as I saw it, I was like, ‘Oh, 100%.’ And I was like, ‘If you all are letting me rock that thing, I’ll wear that thing everywhere.’ It was their idea and they thought it was such a clue that it wouldn’t be a clue, because it’s so obvious. You’re kind of hiding it in plain sight with that on. But I just loved it, I thought it was so cool anyway. It was such a cool look.”
A very cool look — for a wood duck, which Robertson said a lot of “Masked Singer” fans on social media seemed to figure out for themselves.
“The people online knew it, for sure. A mallard’s head is green, not that color.”
The costume choice also informed Robertson’s song selection. The now-eliminated Season 6 contestant (who was cut along with Bobby Berk’s Caterpillar tonight) chose to perform Sugar Ray’s “Fly” on Wednesday’s episode.
“I’ve always liked that song, and then I thought it was so apropos because I would assume Mallard would love to fly. So it just makes a lot of sense to me.“
“The Masked Singer” will return with a new episode Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 8/7c on Fox.
