Dead men tell no tales, but apparently, Margot Robbie’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” tale itself is dead. According to Robbie, her spinoff in the franchise is no longer moving forward.
Robbie revealed the news in a new interview with Vanity Fair, published Monday morning. In it, the actress revealed that development on the movie, which was first announced in 2020, has halted, seemingly indefinitely.
“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it,” she said.
Reps for Disney did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
Robbie didn’t go into any further detail on why the movie has been scrapped, or what the story itself would’ve been. When first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the film was set to be “wholly original,” with entriely new characters, and inspired by the actual attraction at Disneyland.
Christina Hodson, who worked with Robbie on “Birds of Prey,” was set to write the movie, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer also set to return. In May of this year, Bruckheimer confirmed that the script was in the works, but noted that there were two different versions: one with Robbie and one without.
The movie would’ve marked the sixth film in the “Pirates” franchise, following “Dead Men Tell No Tales” in 2017. That film reunited original “Pirates of the Caribbean” stars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley in its final moments, as their son (Brenton Thwaites) was able to break Will Turner’s curse as captain of the Flying Dutchman.
