Mandalay Pictures has made a pre-emptive deal to acquire film rights to Sophie Jordan's just-published young adult novel "Firelight," reports Variety.
The supernatural story follows teenage twin sisters who are descendants of dragons. The girls live in secret with their endangered pride, but when their mother learns that the pride has a dark plan for one of the girls who possesses the rare talent of fire breathing, she whisks the twins away to live a normal life among humans.
Mandalay's Peter Guber and Cathy Schulman are producing, while Adam Stone will oversee the project for the company and serve in some producing capacity.
"Firelight" is the first in a three-book series from Jordan, aka Sharie Kohler, and was one of five selected by the YA Editor's Buzz Panel at Book Expo America earlier this year.
Mandalay recently optioned Joe Hill's best-selling novel "Horns" and Max Barry's upcoming "Machine Man." The company just wrapped the Pierce Brosnan-Ed Harris movie "Salvation Boulevard."
