“Making a Murderer” subject Steven Avery, who is currently behind bars for the murder of Teresa Halbach, will speak to Dr. Phil McGraw in his first broadcast interview.
According to a press release, Avery called his fiancée, Lynn Hartman, for the segment while she sat in the studio with McGraw. TheWrap previously reported that the couple got engaged after eight months of knowing each other, although they’ve only met once.
“I haven’t been in love my whole life. It’s not the same as the others. Everything is all different with her,” Avery told McGraw. “I want to wait [to marry] until I’m out and I don’t think that’ll be too long; right around the corner.”
Avery also hopes that Brad Pitt will play him should a movie ever get made about the murder for which he was convicted along with nephew Brendan Dassey. However, Dassey’s conviction was recently overturned by a federal judge, and Avery hopes that the same will happen for him.
Netflix’s “Making a Murderer” chronicled the 2005 murder of Wisconsin photographer Halbach and subsequent trial. Since the documentary’s debut in December of last year, the nation has been split over Avery and Dassey’s guilt. Avery’s lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, has said she is “confident Mr. Avery’s conviction will be vacated when we present the new evidence and results of our work to the appropriate court.”
“The truth is coming out, and sooner or later all the truth will come out,” Avery says in the upcoming interview.
The two-part interview will air on Oct. 3 and Oct. 4 on CBS.
