Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” are back.
While the live-action version of “Snow White” doesn’t hit theaters until next week, Disney is already promoting its next reimagining, with the first full trailer for the new version of “Lilo & Stitch.” You can watch it below.
Many of the moments in the trailer are direct replicas of similar scenes in the animated classic, which was directed by recent Oscar nominee Chris Sanders and Den DeBlois, who has his own live-action adaptation coming later this summer, with “How to Train Your Dragon.” This time around Dean Fleischer Camp, who directed A24’s extremely charming “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On,” is handling directing duties, with a cast that includes Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Agudong as Nani, Zach Galifianakis as Jumba, Billy Magnussen as Pleakley and Courtney B. Vance as Cobra Bubbles. Sanders returns to voice Stitch and original voice actors Tia Carrere and Jason Scott Lee also return in supporting roles.
Originally intended as a direct-to-Disney+ release, last year it was decided that the film would get a full theatrical release. This likely had to do with the popularity of the Stitch character, who sells a truly staggering amount of plush for consumer products and who has been featured in various theme park attractions and live entertainment at the Disney Parks around the world. (Also keep in mind that the movie is set in Hawaii and Disney has a deluxe resort in Hawaii.)
Next in the animation-to-live-action pipeline is “Moana,” hitting theaters on July 10, 2026 and featuring Dwayne Johnson returning to the iconic role of Maui. Also in various stages of development are live-action versions of “Hercules,” “The Aristocats,” “Bambi” and “Tangled.”
“Lilo & Stitch” hits theaters on May 23, 2025.
