Janelle Monae and Leslie Mann are joining Steve Carell in the Untitled Robert Zemeckis Project, Universal announced Friday.

The film will be about the moving true story of one broken man’s fight as he discovers that artistic imagination can restore the human spirit. Zemeckis will both direct and produce from a screenplay he wrote with Caroline Thompson.

Oscar-winning producer Steve Starkey and Jack Rapke of Zemeckis’ Universal-based ImageMovers banner will also produce, alongside Cherylanne Martin.  The project will be executive produced by Jeff Malmberg, who directed the 2010 documentary upon which this film is based, and Jackie Levine.

Mann recently starred in “How to Be Single” and “The Comedian” and will next star in “The Pact” alongside Ike Barinholtz, John Cena and Kathryn Newton. Mann is represented by CAA and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller & Gellman L.L.P.

Monae last starred in the Oscar-winning films “Hidden Figures” and “Moonlight,” the latter of which took home the Best Picture Academy Award. Monae is represented by WME and Wondaland Management.
