Legendary Options ‘Mass Effect’

Production company looks to develop Bioware’s futuristic video game into Warner-released movie

Legendary Pictures has optioned the Electronic Arts game “Mass Effect” for possible motion-picture adaptation, the production company confirms.

Produced by Bioware, the futuristic video game is based around a spaceship sent from Earth in the year 2183 to confront a group of genocide-minded aliens.

The game was released in January.

Writer Mark Protosevich (“I Am Legend,” “Thor”) is in talks to draft a screenplay.

“ ‘Mass Effect’ is a tremendous property ripe for translation to the big screen,” said Thomas Tull, chairman and CEO of Legendary Pictures.  “ ‘Mass Effect’ is a prime example of the kind of source material we at Legendary like to develop; it has depth, compelling characters and an engaging back story.”
