“Landman” will be returning for a Season 2. It’s an unsurprising move from Paramount+ considering how big of a hit the Billy Bob Thornton-led drama has been for the streamer.

The premiere episode of the Taylor Sheridan series secured 35 million streaming viewers globally, making it the most streamed premiere episode in the history of Paramount+. Additionally, “Landman” set internal records for debuting the most-watched finale in the history of the streamer and becoming the No. 1 most-watched Paramount+ original, the No. 1 engagement driver and No. 1 show in households.

The success of “Landman” continued a hot streak for Sheridan and Paramount+. Three of Sheridan’s streaming originals — “Landman,” “Tulsa King” and “Lioness” — ranked among Nielsen’s list of the Top 10 SVOD Original Series during the fourth quarter of 2024. Since Nielsen began recording this metric in the third quarter of 2017, this marks only the second time that a non-Netflix streamer has had three series in a Top 10 quarterly list.

Overall, “Tulsa King” was the most-watched Paramount+ series to place on the list, which makes sense given that Season 2 premiered in September. The crime drama starring Sylvester Stallone accounted for 5.7 billion streaming minutes, putting it third on the list. It was followed by “Landman” in eighth place with 5 billion streaming minutes and “Lioness” in ninth place, also with 5 billion minutes. The inclusion of “Landman” at all is especially notable given that the drama premiered in mid-November.

“‘Landman’ was one of the biggest shows of the year because of Taylor Sheridan’s unique ability to tap into the cultural zeitgeist, harnessing the Neo-western themes of rugged individualism, ambition and working-class struggles set against contemporary debates around energy, climate change and economic growth,” Paramount Global co-CEO Chris McCarthy said in a Wednesday statement. “The series has helped drive Paramount+ to new heights as the No. 2 SVOD in the U.S. for original hours watched in quarter four, alongside our other hit series ‘Tulsa King,’ ‘The Agency,’ ‘Lioness’ and ‘Dexter: Original Sin.’”

Co-created by Sheridan and Christian Wallace, “Landman” is set in the boomtowns of West Texas and follows those who try to make their fortunes in the world of oil rigs. The series has already earned Thornton a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Tommy Norris, the VP of an oil company. In addition to Thornton, the series stars Demi Moore, Andy Garcia, Ali Larter, Jacob Lofland, Michelle Randolph, Paulina Chávez, Kayla Wallace, Mark Collie, James Jordan and Colm Feore.

The drama is executive produced by Sheridan, Wallace, David C. Glasser, David Hutkin, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, Thonton, Geyer Kosinski, Michael Friedman and Stephen Kay. Dan Friedkin and Jason Hoch also EP for Imperative Entertainment, and J.K. Nickell and Megan Creydt do so for Texas Monthly. Tommy Turtle serves as co-executive producer. “Landman” is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios and Sheridan’s Bosque Ranch Productions. The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution and is exclusively available to stream on Paramount+.
