Lady Gaga captivated at the Oscars on Sunday night, singing a medley of songs from “The Sound of Music,” bringing a crowd of A-listers to their feet with her voice.
The singer usually plays in the abstract with her wardrobe, concert sets and song lyrics, but at the Academy Awards she brought a gown, a wide smile and her incredible pipes.
As the Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer classic turns 50 this year, Scarlett Johannson introduced Gaga to sing songs from the film like the eponymous title number, “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things” and “Climb Every Mountain.”
Following the set, the whole of the Dolby Theater stood, as cameras showed emotional crowd reactions from Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lopez and Meryl Streep. Afterward, Andrews emerged to receive Gaga and present Best Original Song.
“Dear Lady Gaga, thank you for that wonderful tribute,” Andrews said, “it really warmed my heart. It’s hard to believe that 50 years have gone by since that joyous film was released. I blinked and suddenly here I am.”
Other notable musical performances from the evening included those from Adam Levine and Maroon 5, Tim McGraw saluting Glenn Campbell and The Lonely Island proving everything really is awesome.
