A game-show-style conversation with Jack Black and Shirley MacLaine and artist-in-residence presentations by singer/actress Erykah Badu and composer Daniele Luppi have joined the lineup at the 2011 Los Angeles Film Festival, LAFF announced on Friday.
Gala screenings of Screen Gems' "Attack the Block" and Lionsgate's "The Devil's Double" have also been added to the slate at the festival, which runs from June 16 through June 26 in downtown Los Angeles.
Black and MacLaine star in the festival's opening night film, Richard Linklater's "Bernie." They will talk about their lives and work in what the LAFF release calls "a fun, game-show approach to the old career discussion," moderated by critic Leonard Maltin.
The festival's newly-named artists in residence, Badu and Luppi, will each screen a film and follow it with a Q&A. Badu will show Ricky Gervais' comedy "The Invention of Lying," while Luppi — who has worked with Danger Mouse, Gnarls Barkley and John Legend, and scored a number of independent films — will screen the 1966 Italian film "Navajo Joe."
"Attack the Block" (left), one of the two newly-announced galas, is directed by Joe Cornish and stars Jodie Whitaker and John Boyega; it deals with a gang of street kids in London who are forced to fight off an alien invasion.
"The Devil's Double" is directed by Lee Tamahori and stars Dominic Cooper in the true story of an Iraqi soldier ordered to serve as a body double for the brutal Uday Hussein.
The Los Angeles Film Festival, which is produced by Film Independent, will screen more than 200 features, shorts and videos. For the second consecutive year, it will be based at the L.A. Live complex in downtown Los Angeles.
