Warner Bros.’ kitten comedy “Keanu” grossed an estimated $560,000 in Thursday night previews.
The film stars Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele as two friends who infiltrate a violent Los Angeles street gang in order to retrieve a kidnapped kitten.
Made on a $15-million production budget, “Keanu” is expected to make that amount back this weekend as it opens — and perhaps even more.
But “Keanu” won’t be enough to take down Disney’s “Jungle Book,” which is expected to top the box office for its third consecutive weekend. The live-action hit brought in $3.76 million on Thursday alone.
The first feature-length Key and Peele movie has a respectable “fresh” 77 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which can’t be said for Garry Marshall‘s poorly-reviewed dramedy “Mother’s Day,” also opening this weekend.
Starring Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, and Kate Hudson, the film brought in $225,000 on Thursday and is expected to open with $11 million.
