Maybe Katy Perry has more in common with Britney Spears than she thought.
Perry, who was criticized last month for seeming to make light of Britney Spears‘ 2007 meltdown by boasting that she hasn’t “shaved my head yet,” veered dangerously close to the cueball look on Thursday with a dramatically short-cropped hairdo.
The “Chained to the Rhythm” chanteuse showcased the new look, which features close-shorn sides beneath a mop of blond locks, via an Instagram video.
Many were quick to point out that Perry’s new look is similar to one sported by fellow songbird Miley Cyrus. However, Perry was raked over the coals in February for seeming to take a pot-shot at another singer who infamously sported a close-cut look: Britney Spears.
Perry had taken a break from music and during an interview with E!’s Ryan Seacrest on the Grammys red carpet, the host commented that the singer is “back to the music.”
“That’s called taking care of your mental health,” said Perry before Seacrest asked her how that was going.
“I haven’t shaved my head yet,” said the 32-year-old artist, alluding to Spears’ infamous 2007 meltdown.
According to the Huffington Post, the “Dark Horse” singer repeated the joke in another interview, saying that after changing her hair color so many times all that would be left to do is shave her head — which she’s “saving for a very public breakdown.”
Perry’s comments received sharp response on Twitter, with one critic writing, “When Katy Perry says she took a mental health break but shades Britney’s hard time. Good luck with your new album.”
Perry reportedly broke up with boyfriend, actor Orlando Bloom, recently — an event that could conceivably lead a person to dramatically change their hair and, perhaps, a period of emotional and mental trauma.
However, Perry is taking the split in stride — or, at least, that’s what her Twitter account would have one believe:
