Katie Couric, Brian Williams, Bill Moyers and “Anvil! The Story of Anvil” were among the winners at Monday night’s 31st annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards, which took place in New York City’s Lincoln Center.
CBS was the top winner with seven awards, followed by NBC with six and PBS with five. ABC, HDNet, the History Channel, the National Geographic Channel, Planet Green and the Sundance Channel each received two.
CBS’s “60 Minutes” was the top single program, with four Emmys; the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric and the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams each won two, as did PBS’ “Frontline.”
“Anvil! The Story of Anvil,” the irreverent documentary about the long-suffering Canadian hard rock band, aired on VH1 and won an Emmy for Outstanding Arts & Culture Programming, which may be the first time that the phrase “arts and culture” was ever used in connection with Anvil.
Documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman received the Lifetime Achievement Award, while the “PBS NewsHour” was honored with the Chairman’s Award.
Robert Haldeman, who was arrested last year for attempting to extort money from David Letterman, was nominated for an episode of "48 Hours Mysteries," but he did not attend or win.
The awards are presented by the New York-based National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
