Kate McKinnon and Kumail Nanjiani will co-host the 2016 Film Independent Spirit awards, Film Independent President Josh Welsh announced Thursday.
The 31st annual awards ceremony will take place on Feb. 27, with the broadcast airing live on IFC at 2 p.m. PT.
“We are ridiculously excited to have Kate McKinnon and Kumail Nanjiani hosting the Spirit Awards this year,” Welsh said in a statement. “They are two of the smartest, funniest human beings on the planet and I can’t wait to see what creative mayhem they bring to the show in February.”
McKinnon currently stars on the 41st season of “Saturday Night Live,” where she joined the cast in 2012. She will also star in the upcoming films “Ghostbusters” and “Masterminds.” She voiced characters for the upcoming film, “Angry Birds” and animated series such as “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy.”
Nanjiani currently stars on HBO’s “Silicon Valley,” which won a TV Critics Choice Award for Best Comedy Series and has received several Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. He will play the lead role in the upcoming “The Big Sick,” produced by Judd Apatow. His other credits include “The Five-Year Engagement,” “Sex Tape” and “Hot Tub Time Machine 2.”
The Film Independent Spirit Awards annually honors independent films and promotes these films to a wider audience. Awards are given in categories including Best Feature, Best Screenplay, Best Lead, Best Cinematography, Best International Film and Best Documentary.
