Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jamie Foxx will co-star in an upcoming untitled sci-fi thriller at Netflix, the studio said on Thursday.
The film will be directed by long-time collaborators Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the filmmaking team behind “Catfish”, as well as the third and fourth installments in the “Paranormal Activity” franchise.
Mattson Tomlin wrote the script for the film, which is expected to start shooting in New Orleans in October.
The screenplay for the film, titled “Power” in an earlier version, is described as a heightened sci-fi action thriller set in Portland against the backdrop of a drug epidemic. Only in this case, the drug in question grants users a range of superpowers.
Gordon-Levitt is expected to play a cop trying to get the drug off the street, eventually realizing that the only way to fight the users is to take the drug himself.
Bryan Unkeless and Eric Newman are producing via their Screen Arcade shingle under their first look deal with Netflix. The team was also behind last year’s Will Smith action fantasy “Bright,” to which Netflix has confirmed there will be a sequel. Anthony Katagas and Orlee Rose-Strauss are also producing.
Foxx will make his next big screen appearance in Lionsgate’s “Robin Hood,” out Nov. 21, opposite Taron Egerton. Foxx is currently filming the courtroom drama, “Just Mercy” opposite Michael B. Jordan and Brie Larson.
Gordon-Levitt can next be seen in the independent thriller, “7500,” written and directed by Patrick Vollrath. The film centers on an airline hijacking as desperate fear of the unknown undermines both hijacker and pilot.
Gordon-Levitt is repped by WME and Jackoway Tyerman. Foxx is repped by CAA and LBI Entertainment.
