John Oliver dissected the medical devices industry Sunday on “Last Week Tonight,” and you’ll never look at 2015 movie “Chappie” the same way again. We’ll explain.
While getting into the dangers of the FDA’s clearance (vs. approval) process, Oliver pointed to the example of DePuy Synthes, a Johnson & Johnson company which made and sold a metal on metal hip replacement. It was shaped like previously OK’d devices, but was manufactured with the far less forgiving material.
“It turns out that when metal rubs against metal, bad things can happen,” Oliver said, “which sounds like the tagline for a movie about a masturbating robot.”
Cue the poster. Yes, that’s a WIRED mag.
“You’ll notice that we didn’t actually come up with a funny fake name for that movie,” the HBO personality continued, “because the perfect name for a movie about a masturbating robot already exists, and it’s ‘Chappie.’”

Below is the legit logline for the film, which stars Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver.
In the near future, crime is patrolled by a mechanized police force. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself.
That “feel for himself” line though.
