“Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver explored school segregation on Sunday night, noting that New York is now the most divided state in America.
“Oh s–t liberal white New Yorkers, twist ending, you were racist the whole time,” Oliver joked.
The comedian pointed to a study that shows the south is now the least segregated region for black students and explained that minorities are at a disadvantage.
“Black and Latino children are more likely to attend school with higher concentrations of inexperienced teachers, which are then less likely to offer a college prep curriculum, on top of which because race and class are inextricably linked,” Oliver said. “Those students are six times as likely to be in high-poverty schools.”
Oliver went on to explain that the reason for the segregations boils down to money.
“Funding tends to follow white people around the way white people follow the band Phish around,” Oliver said while explaining that New York City has had the same issues since the days of Malcolm X.
The 18-minute segment offers a thorough history of the school segregation issues that have plagued America for decades.
