John Oliver Calls Over 1,000 Midterm Election Winners, Despite 0 Percent of Precincts Reporting (Video)

One-quarter of Tuesday’s candidates are running unopposed — and we should all be terrified about that

Maybe just don’t even show up to the polls on Tuesday. After all, Congress is at an all-time low level of effectiveness, many state legislatures seem crazy, and more than 1,000 midterm election candidates are running completely unopposed.

“Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver took all to task on Sunday’s show, two days before Election Day. An estimated 25 percent of Tuesday’s candidates are without competition, so the host spent some time this weekend calling a ridiculous number of races super early, despite zero percent of the precincts reporting. And some of the foregone-concluded winners ought to terrify those who live in their jurisdiction.

Earlier, in the below clip, Oliver shared some of the most ridiculous local candidate commercials and updated viewers on the embarrassing/hilarious happenings at the statehouse level.

He later educated his studio audience on harmful bill mill ALEC — the American Legislative Exchange Council — and of course used the opportunity to drop a great Baldwins joke.
