John Goodman Joins Kevin Smith’s ‘Red State’

The political horror film also stars Michael Parks, Kevin Pollak, Michael Angarano and Melissa Leo

Veteran character actor John Goodman has joined the cast of Kevin Smith's quasi-horror movie "Red State," his publicist has confirmed to TheWrap.

Smith broke the casting news on Ralph Garman's Hollywood Babble-On podcast. The show is part of Smith's SModcast network, which just joined Sirius XM Radio.

Michael Parks ("Death Proof") stars as a crazed preacher who runs up against a motley crue of teenagers and decides to show them the true meaning of "extreme fundamentalism." The lead character is inspired by Fred Phelps, the founder of the hateful Westboro Baptist Church.

Kevin Pollack, Michael Angarano, Kyle Gallner, Stephen Root and Oscar nominee Melissa Leo co-star in the film, which starts production this week.

Goodman and Leo previously worked together on HBO's "Treme." The actor recently voiced 'Big Daddy' La Bouff in Disney's "The Princess and the Frog." He's expected to reprise his voice role as James P. 'Sulley' Sullivan in Pixar's "Monsters Inc." sequel, which is currently in development.

Goodman is represented by Gersh.
