Lionsgate has closed a deal for John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to write a screenplay based on Hasbro’s classic board game “Monopoly,” Lionsgate announced on Wednesday.
The project is produced by LuckyChap and Hasbro Entertainment.
Lionsgate extended its development rights to the beloved, multi-generational board game with its purchase of eOne, which was completed in December 2023. “Monopoly” is recognized as the world’s most popular board game brand, with a 99% global awareness rate. The beloved strategy game is available in more than 100 countries across the globe and has sold nearly half a billion copies since its debut in 1935.
“We knew LuckyChap would be a beacon for the best talent in town, and Lionsgate & Hasbro are thrilled that Goldstein and Daley have decided to join the fun,” Erin Westerman, co-president, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement. “We have been long time admirers of their work—telling bold, original, intelligent stories for all audiences. They are the perfect architects for this franchise.”
James Myers is overseeing the project for Lionsgate. Robert Melnik negotiated the deal on behalf of the studio.
Daley and Goldstein most recently wrote and directed their original feature, “Mayday,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh for Apple TV+ and Skydance. Prior to that, they wrote and directed the critically acclaimed “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”
They are repped by CAA, Fourth Wall Management, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller, Gellman and Meigs and Fox.
