Lionsgate has promoted Joel Meyer to executive vice president of worldwide production for its television unit, succeeding Gary Goodman who decided to take an early retirement package, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.
In his new role, Meyer will be responsible for overseeing the studio’s slate of premium scripted series as well as its East Coast production facilities in Yonkers, N.Y., Atlanta, Ga. and Newark, N.J the company announced Thursday.
“He has led the charge on many key series while navigating the pandemic and the strikes, and his leadership and dedication will be critical to moving our Television Group forward,” Lionsgate Television Group Chair & Chief Creative Officer Kevin Beggs and Vice Chairman Sandra Stern said in a joint statement. “We are grateful for Gary Goodman’s nearly 20 years of outstanding service to Lionsgate, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
Meyers, an 18-year Lionsgate veteran, has most recently served as head of production throughout the Television Group’s growth into a $1.5 billion annual revenue powerhouse, contributing to the success of series including “Mad Men,” “Orange is the New Black,” “Weeds,” “Nurse Jackie” and “Nashville.”
He spearheaded production on multiple “Power” franchise installments as well as “BMF,” “P-Valley,” and “The Serpent Queen” for Starz; “The Studio,” “Mythic Quest,” and “Acapulco” for Apple TV+; and the John Wick prequel “The Continental” for Peacock and Amazon Prime.
Before joining Lionsgate, Meyer served as a producer for ABC Family and worked on series including “Switched at Birth,” “Jane By Design,” and “Chasing Life.”
Lionsgate Television Group’s slate includes ABC’s “The Rookie” Season 7, a spinoff in the works from series creator Alexi Hawley, USA Network’s adaptation of John Grisham’s “The Rainmaker,” MGM+’s reimagining of Robin Hood, and multiple “Power Universe” shows for Starz. In addition to “The Studio”, upcoming series include Starz’s “Spartacus: House of Ashur” and the first-ever Twilight TV series “Midnight Sun” from creator Stephenie Meyer for Netflix.
