Republicans are gearing up to deal with an indictment of twice impeached former president Donald Trump after election day, according to new reports. And to Jimmy Fallon, waiting until then feels a bit like strategically planning a messy breakup.
During his “Tonight Show” monologue on Tuesday, Fallon cited a report from The Hill, which says that “Republican aides and strategists privately expect Attorney General Merrick Garland to pursue an indictment of former President Trump within 60 to 90 days after Election Day.”
“Feels like the political version of waiting to break up with someone until after the holidays,” Fallon joked.
That said, the host admitted that there’s some logic to waiting for the holidays, if only to make it feel like a true seasonal TV special for Democrats.
“Yeah, Trump could be indicted for the holidays — which sounds kind of like a Christmas movie on MSNBC,” he added.
Of course, Fallon suspected Trump is too busy to even realize an indictment might be coming, thanks to Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. This week, Roberts temporarily blocked the release of Trump’s tax records to Democrats, just two days before they were set to be handed over.
“Trump was so excited, he started chugging ketchup like he won the Indy 500,” Fallon mocked.
