Jerry Bruckheimer’s “Bad Boys” TV spinoff starring Gabrielle Union has landed a pilot order from NBC, TheWrap has learned.
The drama sees Union reprise her role as DEA agent Syd Burnett from 2003’s “Bad Boys II.”
In the new TV version, Burnett — who is the sister of Martin Lawrence’s Marcus Burnett from the film franchise — has a fresh start in her new job as an LAPD detective.
According to the announcement from NBC, she’s now partnered with Nancy McKenna, a working mom who can’t help but look at Syd’s freedom with some grass-is-greener envy. These two have totally different lifestyles and approaches, but they both are at the top of their fields in this action-packed, character-driven procedural.
The as-yet untitled spinoff comes from “The Blacklist” writers-producers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier, and is created by Sony Pictures Television Studios, Jerry Bruckheimer Television, Primary Wave and 2.0 Entertainment.
Bruckheimer is an executive producer along with Jonathan Littman, KristieAnne Reed, Jeff Gaspin, Jeff Morrone, Doug Belgrad, Sonnier and Margolis.
The original “Bad Boys” buddy cop movie, released in 1995, was directed by Michael Bay, produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer and starred Lawrence and Will Smith as two Miami narcotics detectives. The two returned, along with Bay for the 2003 sequel.
