Japan’s Earthquake Shakes Foreign Box Office

Foreign receipts are off about 60% from the same weekend last year, with the Asia-Pacific region’s biggest driver hit hard by earthquake and tsunami

Given the scope of the disaster, a ding to the global motion picture business seems hardly a concern.

But the international box office has taken a hit following Friday's 8.9-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami off the northeastern coast of Japan.

According to studio estimates, the international market was off about 60 percent this weekend, with the biggest driver to the Asia-Pacific region dealing with issues like rolling blackouts in areas not directly affected by the disaster.

Paramount's "Rango" led the foreign market this weekend, grossing an estimated $23 million in 46 territories.
