Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to star as the Marvel villain Mysterio in the upcoming “Spider-Man: Homecoming” sequel, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Jon Watts returns to direct the sequel, with Tom Holland set to reprise the character of Peter Parker in the film.

The first “Spider-Man: Homecoming” grossed $334 million domestically and $880.2 million worldwide since it debuted last summer. It was extremely well-reviewed — it holds a “fresh” score of 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mysterio is the name of several supervillains in the Marvel comics, appearing in numerous Spider-Man cartoons and video games as well. He first appeared in “The Amazing Spider-Man #13” in June 1964.

Gyllenhaal will next star in Jacques Audiard’s “The Sisters Brothers,” as well as Dan Gilroy’s untitled Netflix picture and Paul Dano’s “Wildlife.” He will also start shooting Cary Fukunaga’s “The American” in the fall, in which he will portray Leonard Bernstein.

Sony had no comment.

Sony and Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming 2” will hit theaters on July 5, 2019.

Gyllenhaal is represented by WME, ID PR and Bloom Hergott.
