This may be tentpole season, but a couple of specialty films are making waves at the summer box office.
Focus Features expanded Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" into 96 theaters and took in $1.5 million, a glossy per-screen average of $16,443.

That enabled it to claim the No. 10 spot at the U.S. box office, where the opening film at this year's Cannes Film Festival has now made $3.2 million in three weeks.
In its sixth week, Searchlight's "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" continued with a strong hold — and its fifth week in the top ten — with $3.2 million from 1,298 theaters. That upped its overall U.S. gross to $31 million.
The Weinstein Co. expanded "The Intouchables" into 77 theaters and picked up some steam, making $385,000, a $5,000 per-screen average.
The Film District's "Safety Not Guaranteed" took in $100,000 from 9 locations. The company plans to expand it into around 50 theaters next week.
Fox Searchlight bowed "Lola Versus" in four theaters this weekend with a total gross of $34,097 for a pre-screen average of $8,525.
Todd Solondz's "Dark Horse" brought in $15,000 from the single theater in which it bowed.
