The overseas reception for “Inception” played out much like it did at home – with two straight weeks solidly at No. 1.
The Warner Bros. mind-bender dropped just 15 percent in its second week of wide international release (its third overall), grossing $46.6 million from a healthy 8,000 venues. It now stands at $250 million in foreign box office.
At No. 2, “Toy Story 3” took another $29.4 million to add to the pile, still playing at nearly 8,000 screens itself in 49 markets. Its total overall cumulative overseas gross is $498.7 million, the third-largest grossing animation film ever for the foreign circuit.
“Salt” was No. 3 on the weekend, drawing $16.9 million for an offshore total of $62.8 million. On its heels was another Sony film, “Grown Ups,” which played in 30 markets for $12.7 million.
Rounding out the top five was “Step Up 3D,” from Summit. The dance franchise’s third installment grossed $12.3 million from a handful of key markets.
And slipping in right behind that was the Tom Cruise thriller “Knight and Day,” which has quietly performed well overseas despite a lackluster domestic take. With an additional $12.2 million in 47 territories, the Fox film has now rung up $128 million in total foreign box office.
