Idris Elba ‘Too Street to Play James Bond’ Backlash Leaves Internet Shaken and Stirred: Wrap Trends (Video)

TheWrap’s Jordan Burchette contemplates whether 007 could stand to be a little more 1-8-7

New “James Bond” author Anthony Horowitz courted controversy in a recent interview when he said that Idris Elba was “too street” to play the famous spy.

“For me, Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part. It’s not a color issue. I think he is probably a bit too ‘street’ for Bond,” the “Trigger Mortis” author said, suggesting that “Hustle” star Adrian Lester would be a better choice. “Is it a question of being suave? Yeah.”

Fans of the actor have been calling on the franchise to select Elba as the replacement for Daniel Craig, who has said that the upcoming “Spectre” will likely be his last Bond film.

After receiving backlash accusing him of racism, Horowitz walked back the statement and issued an apology on Twitter. “I am mortified to have caused offence,” he wrote.
