Hulu Apologizes for Oscars Tech Glitches, Scheduling Issue to Blame for Abrupt Shutoff

Hulu apologized for tech glitches that affected users during its first Oscars livestream, including an abrupt shutoff right after the telecast’s presentation of the Best Actress and Best Picture awards.

“Yesterday evening, we experienced technical and livestream issues on Hulu which impacted some Oscars viewers. We apologize for the experience. A full replay of the event is available on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+,” A Disney spokesperson said in a statement.

The live stream hit a snag for some users at the start of the problem, when a tech issue related to the login system impacted some users. Social media also lashed out near the end of the show, when a scheduling issue cut off the telecast several minutes before the end of the show — including the announcement for the Best Actress and Best Picture Awards.

The broadcast, which aired live this year on ABC and on Hulu for the first time, began at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. However, according to Down Detector, a digital service monitoring site, well over 30,000 users reported issues using their Hulu accounts to watch the Oscars.

In response to the thousands of early reports, the official Hulu Support account on X posted at 4:39 p.m., “Having issues logging in? If so – we’re on it! Our team is actively investigating, and we hope to have things back up and running soon.”

The glitches come as Bloomberg previously reported that the Academy is exploring other broadcast partners as their current deal with longtime home ABC nears its end in 2028. That includes streamers like Netflix, who currently air the SAG Awards and has present the show with two glitchless streams — though not enough viewership for a spot in their Top 10.

The 2025 Oscars are now streaming in full on Hulu.
