HuffPost on Tuesday named veteran editor Whitney Snyder as its new editor-in-chief, a month after former boss Danielle Belton resigned from the outlet.

Snyder has been with HuffPost since 2008 and has served as an executive editor since 2022, prior to his promotion. He will now be tasked with leading HuffPost as the politics and news-focused outlet celebrates its 20th year of publishing.

“HuffPost’s around-the-clock journalism holds power to account and informs millions of readers around the globe, helping them understand the world and live better lives,” Snyder said in a statement. “It’s an honor to be leading this newsroom that has shaped me as an editor, leader and person. HuffPost’s role is more vital today than ever, and readers need a news outlet that is loud, direct, honest and interesting, that isn’t afraid to tell it to them straight.”

His promotion follows Belton’s exit in January. The former editor-in-chief resigned because she said she could not continue leading the outlet “in good faith” after HuffPost laid off 30 staffers; Belton had been editor-in-chief for nearly four years at the time she left.

Snyder and executive editor Kate Palmer had been leading HuffPost for the past six weeks following Belton’s departure as the outlet decided on its next boss. Palmer’s role will also be expanding moving forward, as she will serve as the site’s lone executive editor and will look for ways for the newsroom to collaborate with BuzzFeed’s business team. She has been with HuffPost since 2012.

A press release from HuffPost on Tuesday noted that Synder is “a graduate of Brown University, he is married to a former HuffPost colleague and is raising two born-and-bred HuffPost nepo babies in Brooklyn.”
