Helen Mirren and Danny DeVito have joined the voice cast of Disney’s live-action “The One and Only Ivan,” the studio announced Tuesday.
Production has begun on the adaptation of the children’s book by Katherine Applegate, which will be directed by Thea Sharrock (“Me Before You”). Mike White wrote the screenplay. Angelina Jolie, the late Allison Shearmur (who died in January) and Brigham Taylor are producers.
Bryan Cranston, Ramon Rodriguez, Arianna Greenblatt, Indira Varma and Eleanor Matsuura star in the film, while Jolie, Sam Rockwell and Brooklynn Prince have also signed on to voice characters in the film.
The film follows the true story of a gorilla and the other animals who share a communal habitat at a suburban shopping mall. Applegate’s book is a #1 New York Times’ bestseller and has won numerous awards include the Newberry Medal.
Mirren recently starred in “Winchester” for CBS Films and will next star in “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” and “Berlin, I Love You.”
DeVito most recently appeared on “It’s Always Sunny Philadelphia” and “The Comedian,” and will next star in “Smallfoot” and “Dumbo.”
Both actors are represented by CAA and Stan Rosenfield Associates.
