HBO has given a series order to “The Righteous Gemstones,” which stars John Goodman and Danny McBride, the network announced on Tuesday.
The half-hour comedy tells the story of a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work, all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, according to the show’s official logline.
Goodman will star as Eli Gemstone, the family’s patriarch, with McBride portraying his oldest son Jesse. They will be joined by Edi Patterson as Judy, Eli’s daughter who doesn’t have as many opportunities within the church since she is a woman. Adam Devine will play the Gemstone’s youngest son, Kelvin, who brands himself as an outsider of the church.
Cassidy Freeman will play Amber, Jesse’s wife, who gave up on a journalism career to support her husband and the church. Tony Cavalero will play Keefe Chambers, an ex-Satanist who was saved by Kelvin. Tim Baltz will play BJ, Judy’s financé, and Greg Alan Williams will play Martin Imari, Eli’s right-hand man and who is a conservative Kenyan man.
The project comes from McBride, who will write, direct and executive produce in addition to his starring role. Jody Hill and David Gordon Green will also executive produce.
