Universal Pictures signaled it loves gross-out comedies about men and women in a state of arrested development on Friday.
The studio said it has signed a two-year first-look production agreement with "Harold & Kumar" creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg’s Hurwitz & Schlossberg Productions.
The partners wrote and directed Universal’s upcoming fourth film in the "American Pie" franchise, "American Reunion."
“When we first became friends in high school, we shared a dream of making movies — specifically, laugh-your-ass-off comedies," Hurwitz and Schlossberg said in a statement. At Universal, we feel we have found the perfect place to continue turning our dreams into reality. We could not be more grateful for this exciting opportunity."
Hurwitz and Schlossberg wrote the screenplay for the 2004 chronic classic "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle" and wrote and directed 2008’s "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay." They most recently wrote and co-produced 2011’s "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas." The hijinks of the two stoner protagonists have become cult hits and have collectively grossed more than $100 million at the worldwide box office.
"American Reunion" hits theaters on April 6.
Hurwitz & Schlossberg Productions will be based on the Universal lot. Their former assistant, Joseph Amaral, will come aboard as creative executive, the studio said.
