SundanceTV has renewed “Hap and Leonard” — starring James Purefoy and Michael Kenneth Williams as lifelong best friends mucked in swampy, offbeat misadventures — for a second season.
“Hell on Wheels” veteran John Wirth will join as showrunner and executive producer, with Jim Mickle, Nick Damici, Jeremy Platt, Linda Moran and Nick Shumaker back as executive producers.
Purefoy plays Hap Collins, an East Texas white boy fond of Southern ladies, and Williams plays hot-tempered gay, black Vietnam vet Leonard Pine. The show is inspired by the books by Joe R. Lansdale and developed by Jim Mickle and Nick Damici.
Season 1 followed the Hap and Leonard novel “Savage Season,” and Season 2 will take its inspiration from the second book in the series, “Mucho Mojo.”
“We’re thrilled to be bringing ‘Hap and Leonard’ back for another season with these completely unique characters,” said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and SundanceTV.
“James, Michael and the creative and production team did a superb job bringing Joe Lansdale‘s characters to life in Season 1, and Sundance viewers responded accordingly. We can’t wait to see what the boys get up to in Season 2,” he added.
