Gwyneth Paltrow Says Goop’s Infamous Vagina-Scented Candle ‘Started as a Joke’ (Video)

“This is just a little subversive candle for all of us out there,” Paltrow tells Seth Meyers

Gwyneth Paltrow explained the origins of how one of the hottest new Goop products on the market, the vagina-scented candle, came into existence on Thursday’s “Late Night With Seth Meyers.”

“Goop released a product this week that got a lot of attention. It’s already sold out. I would love you to explain it,” Meyers said, which made Paltrow nod knowingly, put a hand to her face, and giggle.

“Well, it’s a candle. It’s called ‘This Smells Like My Vagina,’” Paltrow said.

“It started as a joke,” she continued, explaining that she was with her perfumer, Douglas Little, when she smelled “this beautiful thing.”

“I was like, ‘This smells like my vagina. And I was kidding, obviously, and we were on mushrooms, and — no, we weren’t on mushrooms, we weren’t,” she joked alluding to the episode where she and her Goop team test out the therapeutic effects of psychedelic mushrooms on her new Netflix series “Goop Lab,” which premieres Jan.24. Watch the trailer for that here.

“So then, it actually became a funny thing, because it was A., really funny to us, but also a little bit punk rock,” Paltrow said of the candle.

“I think women, a lot of us have grown up feeling certain degrees of shame around our body, so this is just a little subversive candle for all of us out there.”
