The Directors Guild of America has nominated Guillermo del Toro, Christopher Nolan, Martin McDonagh, Greta Gerwig and Jordan Peele as the best feature-film directors of 2017.
Del Toro was nominated for “The Shape of Water,” Nolan for “Dunkirk,” McDonagh for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” Gerwig for “Lady Bird” and Peele for “Get Out.”
The lineup is unusually diverse for the DGA. Peele is only the fourth black man to be nominated in the category, after Lee Daniels, Steve McQueen and Barry Jenkins. (None have won.)
Gerwig is the eighth woman, following Lina Wertmuller, Randa Haines, Barbra Streisand, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola, Valerie Faris (nominated with her husband, Jonathan Dayton) and Kathryn Bigelow (who was nominated twice, and is the only woman who has won).
Despite the scarcity of both female and black nominees in the past, this is not the first time that the DGA has nominated both in the same year. The 2009 lineup included both Bigelow, who won for “The Hurt Locker,” and Daniels, who was nominated for “Precious.”
Gerwig and Peele are the only two American-born nominees; del Toro is Mexican, Nolan was born in England to a British father and American mother and McDonagh was born in London to Irish parents.
Peele was also nominated in the Directors Guild category for first-time feature filmmakers, along with Geremy Jasper (“Patti Cake$”), William Oldroyd (“Lady Macbeth”), Taylor Sheridan (“Wind River”) and Aaron Sorkin (“Molly’s Game”).
Missing from the Directors Guild slate of nominees: Steven Spielberg for “The Post” and Luca Guadagnino for “Call Me by Your Name.”
All four major Hollywood guilds have now released their nominations, with “Lady Bird” and “Get Out” the only films that have run the table and received nominations from the Directors Guild, Producers Guild and Writers Guild, as well as a Screen Actors Guild ensemble-cast nomination.
“Three Billboards” was nominated by the DGA, PGA and SAG and wasn’t eligible under WGA rules.
Most years, four of the five DGA nominees go on to receive Oscar nominations. Since 2000, all five nominees have matched only twice, while three of the five matched twice and only two of the five matched once, after a bizarre vote by the Academy’s Directors Branch in 2012.
When it comes to predicting Oscar winners, the DGA is among the most reliable of the Hollywood guilds. In the 69 years of the DGA Awards, its winner has also won the Oscar for Best Director 62 times, including 13 of the last 14 years.
The winning director’s film has won the Best Picture Oscar 52 times.
The 70th Annual DGA Awards will take place on Feb. 3 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, and will be hosted by Judd Apatow.
