Billie Joe Armstrong is headed to rehab for unspecified substance abuse issues following an on-stage meltdown in Las Vegas last weekend.
The Green Day frontman launched into a profane rant, complete with guitar smashing, at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on Friday after he was informed via teleprompter that his band had to wrap up its set in a minute.
"I’m not fucking Justin Bieber, you motherf—ers!" Armstrong said. "You gotta be f—ing joking!"
On its website, Green Day announced that Armstrong was seeking treatment and said the band will cancel certain promotional appearances. It also denied that the festival's promoter, Clear Channel, had pushed the band to have an abbreviated performance.
"We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas," the band's statement reads.
Armstrong is scheduled to appear as a mentor on NBC's "The Voice." A spokeswoman for the network did not immediately respond to questions from TheWrap about how his treatment schedule would impact those appearances.
