‘Gravity’ Sounds Best to Cinema Audio Society

Other winners include “Frozen,” “Game of Thrones,” “Modern Family”

“Gravity” won the feature-film award for sound mixing at the 50th annual CAS Awards, which were handed out by the Cinema Audio Society on Saturday night.

“Frozen” won the award for sound mixing in an animated feature, while television awards went to “Game of Thrones,” “Modern Family,” “Behind the Candelabra” and the documentary “History of the Eagles.”

“Gravity,” which is set in the largely sound-free outer reaches of Earth orbit, won over a field that included three other Oscar nominees in the sound-mixing category, “Captain Phillips,” “Inside Llewyn Davis” and “Lone Survivor.” “The Hobbit” received the fifth Oscar spot, while the CAS went with “Iron Man 3.”

“Gravity” and “Captain Phillips” are considered the Oscar frontrunners, though the award often goes to films that feature music prominently, as “Inside Llewyn Davis” does.

The CAS winner has gone on to win the sound-mixing Oscar 11 times in the last 20 years, including five of the last seven years.

“Gravity” and “Captain Phillips” were the big feature-film winners at the other awards show devoted to sound, the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards. Sound editing has a separate Oscars category as well.

The show also included a special tribute to audio pioneer Ray Dolby, who died in September.

Veteran sound mixer Andy Nelson (“Les Miserables,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “Avatar”) received the CAS Career Achievement Award, while director Edward Zwick (“The Last Samurai,” “Blood Diamond,” “Legends of the Fall”) was given the 2014 Filmmaker Award.

The ceremony took place in the Crystal Ballroom of the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
