Charles had been a series regular on the show, playing Will Gardner opposite star Julianna Margulies, before his character was gunned down in an explosive courtroom scene that took fans completely by surprise.

Letterman applauded Charles’ decision to leave the show, calling it a “very courageous” move. The actor said he decided a year ago not to return when his contract expired.
