Twentieth Century Fox TV is betting big on Ryan Murphy.
The "Glee" writer, producer and co-creator has agreed to a new four-year, $24 million deal that will keep him with the studio and its juggernaut series, but also allow him to develop new programming for Fox.
The deal was originally reported by Deadline.com, which described it as "one of the biggest deals ever for a TV writer-producer." Individuals familiar with the deal said that might be exaggerating it a bit.
"It's a significant deal for a significant creator of a show that is doing very well, but the total amount of the deal, even with future shared profit potential, is not a record deal," one individual told TheWrap. "And most of the terms of the deal did not break new ground."
A spokesman for the studio would not discuss the deal, but individuals familiar with the negotiations told TheWrap that studio officials were not happy its specifics were leaked.
Those individuals said Murphy will share in future profits from the "Glee" franchise and also will share a percentage of revenue taken in from music sales, including digital downloads. Murphy can also bring a musical version of "Glee" to Broadway and would share in those profits, too.
