NBC’s primetime blockbuster “This Is Us” and Netflix’s dramedy “Master of None” took top honors at the 2018 GLAAD Awards, handed out Thursday night in Los Angeles.
Dan Fogelman’s “This Is Us” took outstanding drama series and the prize was accepted by cast members Denis O’Hare, Jon Huertas, and Chris Sullivan.
For an outstanding TV episode that does not have an LGBTQ character as a series regular, “Master of None” was celebrated for its widely-beloved episode “Thanksgiving.”
Show writer and star Lena Waithe accepted the prize, as the episode was largely based on her personal experiences growing up in a strong household of African American females and coming out as a lesbian.
In addition to the LGBT-inclusive content, the show honored Britney Spears with the Vanguard Award and “Big Bang Theory” star Jim Parsons with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award. Both were previously announced.
At the event, celebrities sported blue “&” pins for GLAAD’s Together movement – representing GLAAD’s work on intersectional issues including immigration, racial justice, women’s rights, and LGBTQ acceptance.
