“General Hospital” and “Melrose Place” actor Antonio Sabato Jr. is turning his hand to politics, the Los Angeles Times reported on Monday.
The former Calvin Klein model and reality star on VH1’s “My Antonio” is running for congress in California and challenging Rep. Julia Brownley (D-Westlake Village), according to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission.
Sabato Jr. was an outspoken supporter of Donald Trump during the presidential election, and was a speaker at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, last July.
He was inspired to run for office during President Trump’s 2016 run, Charles Moran, his top fundraiser, told CNN, and will likely use his connections with the Trump administration to differentiate himself with other Republicans in the district.
The underwear model-turned-soap actor hit the headlines for the wrong reasons during the convention when he called then-President Obama a Muslim.”We had a Muslim president for seven and half years,” Sabato Jr. told ABC News. “I don’t believe he is [Christian].
“I don’t believe the guy is a Christian. I don’t believe he follows the God that I love and the Jesus that I love,” he added.
Sabato Jr. had starring roles on “General Hospital” and “The Bold and the Beautiful,” and appeared on ’90s primetime drama “Melrose Place,” followed more recently with small roles on “Bones” and “Castle,” as well as a run on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”
