Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling shoot up half of 1940s Los Angeles in the new trailer for "Gangster Squad."
The trench coat and fedora filled preview plays like "The Untouchables" on speed, as tommy guns blare, sultry call girls cast come hither looks and Penn and co-star Nick Nolte compete in a gravely voice-off.
"Los Angeles is a damsel in distress, and I need you to save her," growls Nolte at one point in the two-minute spot.
In "Gangster Squad," that kind of redemption involves an off-the-books group of LAPD officers (Brolin and Gosling) who engage in extra-legal means to bring down gangster Mickey Cohen (Penn). Lest that sound like too much testosterone, Emma Stone is on hand as a gangster moll who finds herself torn between Penn and Gosling. (Gee, who would win that one?)
Directed by Ruben Fleischer ("Zombieland"), the Warner Bros. film hits theater on November 9. What do you think? Is it another "L.A. Confidential" or a film noir rip-off?
